By Doc Klein, I Start Wondering Columnist
(Editor’s Note: Last Sunday’s peaceful demonstrations by National Football League teams struck a chord with many people. Doc suggests that while many see the conflict that arose as a result of these demonstrations as negative, it actually may offer an opportunity for everyone to take a leadership role in creating a dialogue about our differences.)
CALLING ALL LEADERS
What a wonderful opportunity for leaders at all levels
to discuss what this symbol represents and how
we can unite people who are different than one another?
Discussion of course, is rooted in the word percussion
or concussion and involves doing battle between ideas,
which eventually is part of governing system and involves
citizenship, leadership, and compromise.
True Dialogue comes from the notion that we suspend
our judgments for a while and engage in an exploration
of our own best selves and ideas in relationship with others.
This is hard work: more often we choose the lower route
of self-righteousness and condemnation. Then we get
hurt and afraid and shut down our ability to find common
ground. Yet the flag like all symbols, is simply an invitation
for us to get better. What will you choose as a leader?
To divide or unite today?
